In rememberance of the eight Marines who gave their lives on that night so long ago and to the rest who were wounded.
The LT was a very caring Platoon Commander all of the platoon trusted him, to look after them as well as was possible. I remember very well the night that he lost his life defending his men and moving to support others under fire. I truly wish that I had known him on the civi side.

Freddie and I go way back to fishing creeks together near Pioneer California as little guys I was older by couple years, attending Amador High together he went on to Univ of Nevada, I to Humboldt State. We finally caught up to each other at Marine Corps Basic School Quantico. I went on to Pensacola NAS, he being a class behind but deployed immediately, and was killed 2 weeks prior to my going over. To his family: Freddie was a fantastic human being, and I will remember him always. Semper Fi, Fred.

In Loving Memory of Freddie, ACHS Class of '61
http://www.flickr.com/photos/amadormeetingplace/2407436765/

1Lt Fredrick H Williams, Jr

Freddie, we love you and are very, highly proud of you for your devotion to service in the freedom mission of Vietnam.

Freddie has been honored with a personal memorial Vietnam tribute on the Flickr photo site for Amador County High School, Sutter Creek, California, where he graduated in the Class of 1961. The Vietnam era and all that went with it was not popular due to media coverage and sheer politics from armchair generals in Washington D.C. However, today in 2008 after all these years, there is a growing understanding that the highest American principles leading us into Vietnam, where so many gave their lives and others sacrificed so much, also today people are recognizing that Vietnam continues to be most relevant in a world still with tyranny and persecution of the worst kind. Freddie understood those American principles and stated personally to family that he was willing to give his life in service to the American freedom mission there. That freedom included not only South Vietnam citizens of the time, but a greater purpose globally where communism continued to be a threat. Today there is another worse kind of threat to global freedom for which the free nations of the world must meet an even greater, more pervasive challenge, and the principles continue to be the same, undying, universal American principles for all peoples.

This is what Freddie, and our schoolmate Rich Randolph, ACHS Class of 1966, and older schoolmate, Cliff Spiva, ACHS Class of 1958, and others who served in Vietnam all stood for, and those who know Freddie, Rich, and Cliff, or knew of them in Amador County, California, continue to be very, very proud of each of them, saddened by our loss they are deeply missed by many people from the county even still.

You may read their Vietnam memorial tributes at the Amador Meeting Place, under their class photo sections. They did their job to the utmost, and today it is time for all Americans to step up in many different ways, including but not limited to military service and do what is necessary at home and abroad to prevail over today's global War on Terror.

All gave some, Some gave all
Freddie and I grew up within a mile of each other. He being two years older Freddie was a mentor to me. He was well liked and fun to be around.
The small town we lived in was very proud of Freddie.
Freddie is buried in a cemetery on property that was in my family for years. For years while I remained in the area, I would go by and stop to say a word. Freddie is within a few feet of my parents. For years, I and others wondered what had happened. I feel a sense of relief knowing how Freddie fell. Freddie was a great American at a time when it wasn't popular.
I will forever remember his constantly smiling face and fun loving attitude.
ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL, SOME STOOD TRUE FOR THE RED WHITE AND BLUE AND SOME HAD TO FALL. Thank you for your sacrifice Freddie! God Bless

I met Fred on October 10, 1966, the first day of Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. He was a very competitive guy with an affable sense of humor. These character traits spilled over to the others in our unit, 4th platoon, Golf Company. It was hard and rigorous training. I heard later that the attrition rate for our class was 34 percent, considered high. Our platoon was named honor platoon for our class. At Basic School we were assigned to different companies. While in Vietnam I learned of Fred's death reading Stars & Stripes. Another classmate from OCS later confirmed it. He was a good man whose life was cut short in the service of the USMC and his country.

I had the opportunity to visit The Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. I was so overwhelmed with sorrow and pain that I could not hold back the tears for those heroes and their families who lost so much. Though my visit to the Wall was a few years ago, I feel that I left a piece of my heart there. To honor those who died in the Vietnam War and to say thank you I created a small tribute to those heroes. Please click on the link above to view memorial website.

Freddie and I grew up together.as a fishing buddy, high school teammate, and family friend. We connected in our youth on so many levels. I miss him greatly. Fred was known by many as a gentle spirit but fierce competitor who always played by the rules. I know also that in his short life he treasured peace and justice through giving of his service to our country and ultimately paying the highest price anyone could give. Thus should his memory be honored through our continuing struggle toward building peace based on justice in the world.

Well done Sir rest in peace
Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields where glory does not stay And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears: Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl’s. A.E. Housman, "Don't be afraid, I've redeemed you.
I've called your name. You're mine.
